Dr. Jimmie “Jim” Lee Reed, 82, of Nowata, Oklahoma, passed away at his home on August 4, 2021. He was born November 17, 1938, in Vinita, Oklahoma to James Larkin “Bud” and Ida Bell (Stanart) Reed. He was a graduate of Nowata High School in 1956. Jim was inducted into the United States Army in Ft. Benning, GA on August 2, 1956, and earned his Parachutist Badge before being honorably discharged on May 8, 1958. Jim continued with his education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK where he studied for 3 years before being accepted to the Oklahoma University Medical School. He graduated in 1965 and in June of the same year, he married Sharon Ross of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Soon after, he started his post graduate education as an intern at the University of N.M. Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He held several residencies in Internal Medicine from 1966-1968, then Diagnostic Radiology from 1968-1971 at the University of N.M. Medical Center. In 1971, he opened his private practice at Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso, TX. He later completed his residency in Dermatology from 1990-1993 at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, TX. In 1990, he also held the title of Director of Radiology for Brownfield Regional Medical Center in Brownfield, TX. During his time in Lubbock, he served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center 1991-1992, Director of Radiology at Southpark Hospital from 1994-1998 and operated his private dermatology practice from 1991-2004, later combining his practice with radiology from 1998-2004. Jim returned to his hometown in 2005 where he continued to work in the radiology field that he loved until his death.

Dr. Reed was an avid Oklahoma Sooners fan. He enjoyed watching football and golf both live and on television. He also loved flying and owned many airplanes in his lifetime. During his time at OU, he had season game tickets and never missed a game. He grew up playing golf at the Nowata Country Club and played on a regular basis. He was instrumental in establishing the G.L. Myers Memorial Golf Tournament there. Dr. Reed also enjoyed working out to stay physically fit and was quite the tomato growing guru. He was a very intelligent and good man that will be missed by all who knew him.

Preceding Dr. Jim Reed in death are his parents, James and Ida Bell Reed and stepson, Terry Alan McAnally.

He is survived by his two children, Melanie Reed of Pflugerville, Texas, Brad Reed of El Paso, Texas; his ex-wife and mother to his children, Sharon Ross Reed of El Paso, TX, a sister, Joan Breshears of Granbury, TX; a niece Jean Ann Fisher and husband, Keith of Ft. Worth, TX. cousins Margie Blackwell Learned, and husband Wayne, Jane Reed Bliss, John Reed Richardson all of Nowata, Ok and other cousins; Janet Mayhew, an invaluable family friend that helped care for Dr. Reed and Ida Bell Reed for many years; Connie Cruce, a beloved reconnection and many dear friends.

A visitation f or Dr. Jim Reed will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2021, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Benjamin Funeral Home Chapel. 114 W. Cherokee, Nowata, OK. Graveside Service will be held August 12, 2021, at the Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the G.L. Myers Golf Tournament Fund at the Nowata Community Foundation, P.O. 205, Nowata, Oklahoma,74048. Arrangements are under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service Nowata, Oklahoma.
