Daniel Joseph “Joe” Slack, Sr., of Nowata, OK, passed away January 7, 2022, after a heart attack.

Joe was born February 28, 1945, in Nowata, OK, to Virginia Bluejacket Slack and Delbert Charles Slack.

Joe graduated from Nowata High School. He attended Connors State College and NE Oklahoma. He worked at Phillips Petroleum and worked at his family-owned business, Slack Enterprises Inc.

Joe had always been interested in law enforcement and became a Bartlesville Police Department Reserve Officer. In June 1979, Joe joined the BPD as a patrol officer. He retired on July 31, 2004. He was a Critical Incident Response Team member, BPD diver, law enforcement driver training instructor and firearms instructor. In his retirement, Joe continued his firearms qualifications for area law enforcement and taught many people firearms safety and training.

Joe and his wife, Becky rescued, adopted and fostered Chihuahuas for over 20 years. Joe enjoyed the rural lifestyle and spent his time working on the family farm. He also liked fishing and target shooting.

In the early 90s, Joe purchased a home in Nowata across the street from his parents. He did chores for them and watched over them until their deaths.

Joe is a member of the Shawnee Nation and is related to Chief Bluejacket.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Virginia Slack of Nowata, his brother, Benjamin Charles Slack of Ochelata, OK,  and his beloved Chihuahua,  Pete.

Joe is survived by his wife, Becky Burch Slack of Nowata; his daughter, Sheryl Slack of Bartlesville; his son, Daniel Joseph Slack Jr. and wife, Lori Stevens Slack of Canton, TX; Sue Collier of Nowata; Phyllis Whistler of KS, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.

Pall bearers will be Christian Slack, Mason Looney, and law enforcement. Honorary pall bearers are Pat Ballard, Ron Sweeten, Rich Moberly, Tom Whitten,  Joshua Hacker, Marty Dale Martin, Jr., John-David Martin, and Iain Smithyes.

The service will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 211 S. Pine St. in Nowata, OK.  Joe will then be escorted by law enforcement to the Nowata Memorial Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service.
